Snippet

Like most people in Ecottia, Hawk had never cared for magic and did not trust those who practiced it as a rule. Magic gave someone too much of an advantage over others, an advantage that those who did not know its secrets had no way of measuring. It was sneaky and underhanded, and while some considered it a necessary evil, an evil was exactly what it was in Hawk’s mind.

In the five years that his queen had been married to Prince Henri of Serenee, Hawk’s opinion on the matter had not much changed. The prince’s men scuttled about the castle, always looking suspicious no matter what they were doing. There was not one among them he trusted, least of all Leal DuFray, for all his youthful charm and startling beauty. While there were those in Henri’s court who made an effort to reach out to Queen Gaia’s people, DuFray had ever held himself apart from them. Above them.

It was well known that DuFray had long had the ear of the prince, which in and of itself made him powerful enough to be dangerous. He had been little more than a child when the prince and queen had married, and yet he’d already held position as the prince’s most trusted advisor. Beyond that, Hawk knew that he was considered one of the more powerful of the sorcerers Henri had brought with him.

There were a thousand and one reasons for Hawk to be wary, and more than once on the journey from the barracks to the castle, he found himself wondering what sort of trap he might be walking into. He didn’t trust DuFray, but he’d certainly never feared him. In light of the nature of the Queen’s illness, he wondered if that wasn’t a mistake.
